Pollen is abundant in New Zealand, bringing with it blossoming flowers, longer days… and for one in three Kiwis, the dreaded symptoms of hay fever.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is the most common allergy worldwide, affecting 10-30% of people. But did you know it doesn’t just affect your nose? It can also make your eyes red, itchy, and watery.

Eye Allergy Triggers

Hay fever occurs when your immune system overreacts to harmless substances like pollen, mould, dust mites, or pet dander, treating them as threats. These substances are known as allergens.

When allergens enter your system, your body produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to fight them off. This triggers the release of chemicals like histamine, causing sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy, red, watery eyes.

Eye allergies can also be triggered by certain cosmetics or even eye drops containing preservatives. However, food allergies and insect bites typically don’t affect the eyes as severely as airborne allergens.

Happy Eyes Ahead: Tips to Beat Eye Allergies

Avoid Allergens:

  • Stay indoors on windy days and during peak pollen seasons.
  • Keep windows closed at home and in your car. Use air conditioning with HEPA filters to trap allergens.
  • Regularly wash your bedding and curtains in hot water to remove dust mites and pollen.
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors to protect your eyes from airborne allergens.
  • Clean your home frequently to reduce dust buildup.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can worsen irritation.

Contact-Free Allergy Relief

Wearing contact lenses during allergy season can worsen symptoms. Lenses can trap pollen and other allergens against your eyes, causing irritation and dryness.

Consider switching to glasses, which act as a barrier against allergens. If you prefer contacts, opt for daily disposable lenses to reduce allergen buildup and maintain proper hygiene by cleaning them with fresh solution.

Non-Prescription Eye Drops

Over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops can offer quick relief for mild symptoms. These drops help flush out allergens and soothe irritated eyes. Some contain antihistamines to block allergic reactions, while others provide moisture for dry, itchy eyes.

Always consult your Optometrist before starting new eye drops to ensure they’re suitable for you.

Discuss Prescription Medications with Your Optometrist

For more severe symptoms, your Optometrist may recommend prescription treatments, such as:

  • Antihistamines: These block histamine, reducing itching and redness. They come as eye drops, nasal sprays, or oral tablets.
  • Decongestants: Reduce redness and puffiness by shrinking swollen blood vessels. Often combined with antihistamines for comprehensive relief.
  • Mast Cell Stabilizers: Prevent allergic reactions by stopping mast cells from releasing histamine. Best used before allergy season as a preventive measure.
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Alleviate inflammation and discomfort caused by allergens.
  • Steroids: Used for short-term relief of severe symptoms. Prolonged use may increase the risk of side effects, so they should be used under medical supervision.

Do Your Eyes Feel Allergic?

Take this quick quiz to assess your risk:

  • Do allergies run in your family?                                                      Yes      No
  • Do your eyes itch, especially during peak pollen seasons?               Yes      No
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with conjunctivitis (“pink eye”)?        Yes      No
  • Are you allergic to animals like cats or dogs?                                  Yes      No
  • Do you rely on antihistamines or decongestants for allergy relief?    Yes      No
  • Do your symptoms improve when indoors with filtered air?             Yes      No
  • Do cosmetics, lotions, or strong perfumes irritate your eyes?          Yes      No

If you answered “Yes” to most questions, you may have eye allergies. Consult your Optometrist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
