What to expect in a Children’s Eye Test?

During a kids’ eye test, parents and children can expect a child-centered experience that prioritizes comfort and engagement. Pediatric optometrists create a friendly environment with colorful décor, and they use specialized, age-appropriate tools and techniques to make the examination enjoyable.

Instead of traditional charts, children might identify pictures or play interactive games to assess their vision. The optometrist’s approach is patient and gentle, recognizing that each child is unique. Alongside assessing visual acuity, the test evaluates eye health and various aspects of visual development, ensuring early detection and intervention for any potential issues that may affect a child’s learning and overall well-being.

My child has never said anything about their vision?

Children seldom volunteer that they have a vision problem. Usually, the first time they mention that “words move when they read” or “I can’t see the board at school” or “sometimes I see two of everything when I know there’s really only one” is when they are having an eye exam.

An annual eye exam is simple, effective and fun!

Our Paediatric Team have extra training to detect these problems.

How often should I get my Child's eyes checked?

Children between the ages of 2 and 5 should have eye exams at least once before starting kindergarten, around the age of 3 or 4. These exams are crucial for identifying vision problems that can affect learning.

After starting school, children should have comprehensive eye exams every one to two years, even if they haven’t reported any vision issues. Regular check-ups ensure that any vision changes or problems are promptly addressed, helping to support their academic success and overall well-being.
